YouTube Chapters Format Explained (With Copy-Paste Examples)

The exact YouTube chapters format with copy-paste examples for tutorials, reviews, podcasts, and more. Includes formatting rules and common mistakes.

TL;DR: Each chapter is one line in your description: timestamp + space + title. Start at 0:00, use colons, list at least 3 in ascending order, each 10+ seconds apart. Copy-paste examples for every video type below.

YouTube’s chapter format is simple but unforgiving. One small error, a period instead of a colon, a missing 0:00, and the entire feature breaks silently. No error message. Your timestamps just sit in the description as plain text.

This guide covers the exact format YouTube requires, with examples you can copy.

The Basic Format

Each chapter is one line in your video description. Timestamp first, then a space, then the title:

0:00 Introduction
2:30 Getting Started With the Dashboard
5:15 Creating Your First Project
8:45 Common Mistakes to Avoid
12:00 Advanced Tips

That’s it. No special characters, no brackets, no markup.

Timestamp Rules

Videos under one hour — use m:ss:

0:00 Introduction
2:30 Setup
9:45 Testing

Videos over one hour — use h:mm:ss:

0:00:00 Welcome
0:15:30 First Section
1:02:45 Second Section
1:45:00 Closing Thoughts

Leading zeros on minutes are optional. 02:30 and 2:30 both work. But seconds must always be two digits — 2:3 will not work.

What breaks:

FormatWorks?Why
2:30YesStandard m:ss
02:30YesLeading zero is fine
1:02:30Yesh:mm:ss for long videos
2.30NoPeriods aren’t recognized
2,30NoCommas aren’t recognized
2-30NoHyphens aren’t recognized
2:3NoSeconds must be two digits
2;30NoSemicolons aren’t recognized

Separator Between Timestamp and Title

YouTube accepts several styles between the timestamp and chapter title:

0:00 Introduction ← space (most common)
0:00 - Introduction ← space-hyphen-space
0:00 – Introduction ← space-en dash-space
0:00: Introduction ← colon-space

All work. Pick one and stay consistent throughout your description.

The Five Rules You Can’t Break

  1. First timestamp must be 0:00 — This activates the chapter feature. Without it, YouTube treats your list as plain text. Not 0:01. Not 0:05. Exactly 0:00.

  2. Minimum 3 timestamps — Two won’t activate chapters. If you only have two natural breaks, add 0:00 Introduction as your third.

  3. Each chapter must be 10+ seconds — If two timestamps are 8 seconds apart, YouTube rejects the entire list.

  4. Ascending order — Timestamps must go from earliest to latest. 5:30 before 3:15 breaks everything.

  5. Timestamps in the description — Not in a pinned comment. Pinned comment timestamps create clickable links but don’t generate progress bar markers or Google Key Moments.

Chapter Title Best Practices

Titles have no hard character limit, but YouTube truncates them on the progress bar — especially on mobile. Keep titles under 50 characters for clean display everywhere.

More importantly, your chapter titles double as search keywords. Google uses them for Key Moments in search results. Each chapter title is a potential ranking opportunity.

Weak titles (zero search value):

0:00 Let's Go!
1:20 The Fun Part
4:50 Getting Into It
8:30 Things Go Wrong
12:15 Almost Done

Strong titles (keyword-rich, descriptive):

0:00 Introduction to Email Marketing
1:20 Setting Up Your First Campaign
4:50 Writing Subject Lines That Get Opened
8:30 Common Deliverability Mistakes
12:15 Measuring Campaign Performance

The strong titles could each independently rank as a Google Key Moment. The weak titles give Google nothing to work with.

Common Formatting Mistakes

Starting at 0:01 instead of 0:00 — The single most common mistake. Chapters won’t activate without exactly 0:00 as the first entry.

Putting timestamps in a pinned comment — Creates clickable links but not visual chapter markers on the progress bar. Move them to the description.

Using curly quotes or smart quotes — Some text editors (Word, Google Docs) auto-replace straight quotes with curly ones. If you’re drafting timestamps elsewhere, use a plain text editor or paste as plain text.

Adding links before your timestamp block — Some creators report that clickable URLs placed directly above the timestamp list can prevent chapters from activating. Place external links after your timestamps to be safe.

Blank lines between timestamps — This usually still works, but keeping your list compact with one entry per line and no gaps between them is the safest approach.

Mixing format lengths — If your video is under an hour, use m:ss consistently. Don’t mix 0:00 and 00:00:00 in the same list.
